The Office of the Texas Comptroller has announced a tax amnesty program which will run from May 1, 2018 through June 29, 2018. The amnesty program will provide delinquent taxpayers with relief from penalties and interest on tax due and applies to periods due before January 1, 2018. By participating in the program, a taxpayer can obtain a fresh start by filing past due reports, amended reports or registering for taxes that should have been reported. The taxes covered by the amnesty program include any tax administered by the Comptroller’s office with the exception of Public Utility Commission gross receipts assessments.
In order to apply for the amnesty program, the following steps are necessary:
- For original reports, a return must be submitted via paper-filing with “Amnesty” written across the top(and on the check or money order)
- For those returns which are being amended, a return must be submitted via paper-filing with “Amnesty” written across the top(and on the check or money order)
- For tax application (and first-time registrants), “Amnesty” must appear on the application as well as the appropriate returns (and checks and money orders).
Please note that installment payment plans are not available and all payments must be made in full which relate to the amnesty periods. Additionally, taxpayers who have signed a settlement agreement or voluntary disclosure agreement before the beginning of the amnesty period are ineligible for participation in the amnesty program.
