GYF’s “Take Your Kids to Work Day” was a fun day for the kids and the parents! The children joined their dads at the office to learn more about what they do each day. A few of the kids returned to GYF for a second year, and may soon be ready to join the firm full-time!
The activities planned by several of the firm’s professionals (Mary Creamer, Cole DeFillippo, Anna DeGraaf, Andy Mellinger, Daulton Roth, Sarah Spokart and Noah Trimble) included: operating a juice stand, constructing an office building, practicing their 10-key and proofreading skills, completing a teamwork-focused scavenger hunt around the office, working on accounting-themed MadLibs and word searches, and more! - Juice Stand – the kids opened a juice stand in our kitchen to learn accounting fundamentals. They made signs to promote their products, sold orange and apple juice to GYF personnel, and calculated change. Along the way, they faced real-world challenges like running out of inventory, paying rent and wages, and seeing how costs affect profits. They practiced making journal entries for each transaction and took turns counting profits to understand the importance of separation of duties.
- Office Building – With a budget of $30 in monopoly money, the kids constructed their own office buildings using construction paper, note cards, pom-poms, pipe cleaners, tongue depressors, and glue. They carefully evaluated each design choice to ensure they stayed within their budget.
- Audit Practice –The kids were tasked with proofreading and footing a kid-friendly audit report to catch errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation and make sure all the numbers add up correctly.
