Everyone by now has knowledge of a virtual computer concept generally referenced as “the cloud.” Over the last several years more and more companies are actively exploring their information technology options relating to cloud-based software, data storage and other available services. Law firms are no exception and the American Bar Association (ABA) now reports that the percentage of lawyers who use cloud-based software and services has jumped 10% over the two years ending in 2014, to nearly 31%.
A recent article ABA Journal article points out five common mistakes that lawyers make when choosing cloud providers, including:
- Not knowing where your data really lives
- Assuming you own your data
- Neglecting to integrate all your systems
- Relying on multiple parties for support and maintenance
- Focusing solely on price, disregarding ‘best practices’
Before entering into an agreement to engage a cloud-based service provider, these questions, and more have to be addressed. Merely outsourcing to a cloud-based provider does not, in and of itself, relieve the attorney/law firm of all normal responsibilities accorded the information technology needs of the practice.
