David M. Wasieleski, Ph.D., Executive Director – Duquesne University Viragh Institute for Business Ethics
In addition to his leadership role at VIBE, Dr. Wasieleski is the Albert Paul Viragh Professor of Business Ethics in Duquesne’s Palumbo-Donahue School of Business. He teaches courses in business ethics, organizational behavior, management, and sustainability. Dr. Wasieleski is also an Affiliate Research Professor at Excelia Business School in La Rochelle, France; and currently holds a Visiting Scholar position at IAE Paris, Sorbonne Business School.
Dr. Wasieleski‘s academic research focuses on natural science approaches to understanding ethical decision-making, and the formation of social contracts within organizational contexts. He also studies the effects of cognitive biases and moral intensity on perceptions of ethical issues. His work has been published in Business & Society, Business Ethics Quarterly, Organization & Environment, Journal of Applied and Behavioral Sciences, Creativity and Innovation Management, Humanistic Management Journal, Human Resource Management Review, and the Journal of Business Ethics.
Dr. Wasieleski has extensive editorial experience, currently serving as Editor-in-Chief of Business and Society Review and as an Associate Editor for the Humanistic Management Journal. Sponsored by the International Association for Business and Society (IABS), he is co-editor of the Business and Society 360 book series, published annually by Emerald. Dr. Wasieleski has been an active member of the IABS since 2000 and currently serves on the executive board.

The program emphasizes how digital tools need to align with the firm’s stated purpose, values and responsibilities while avoiding harm to stakeholders. Dr. Wasieleski will focus on the importance of combining traditional ethical theories with critical perspectives to take a closer look at issues that concern safety, security, transparency, accountability, justice and privacy.
The presentation will also examine the impact of rapidly evolving technologies, such as AI, for scientific discovery, privacy-enhancing tools and immersive built-world systems, and how ethical awareness is necessary. Finally, Dr. Wasieleski will recommend practical assessment techniques to help professionals navigate technology-driven ethical dilemmas in an effective and impactful way.

Despite reminders that such threats can occur anywhere, many overlook the issue due to uncertainty about how to begin, or a belief that “it can’t happen here” and that incidents are “random.” However, workplace violence is never random; it follows observable patterns, and is a process often as predictable as boiling water, if you know what to look for. Prevention is crucial. Recognizing warning signs early allows for timely intervention before an incident occurs.
Sam shares vital insights into the psychology of workplace violence and mass homicide, helping us to understand who may commit such acts and why. He offers specific guidance on assessing threats and managing potentially dangerous situations, aiming to minimize risks and maximize positive outcomes.
